Susrusha Setu Health Camp: A Meaningful Day of Service

On 8th October, I had the opportunity to be part of the Susrusha Setu Health Camp held at the Kachumari High School playground. The camp was organized by the Government of Assam under the Health and Family Welfare Department, Assam, with a strong focus on improving child health through early screening and timely referral.

The scale of the camp was impressive. Around 900 children were examined during the day by various specialist doctors. Children up to the age of 18 years were screened for multiple conditions under the RBSK framework, including congenital heart disease (CHD), Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, motor difficulties, and vision, speech, and hearing defects. Early identification of such conditions can significantly improve long-term outcomes, and this camp played a crucial role in that process.

A few children who required advanced care were referred to higher centers like AMCH and GMCH for further evaluation and treatment. To ensure smooth access to care, free bus services were arranged for the referred patients, which was a thoughtful and much-needed support for families.

As an RBSK Medical Officer, my role was to guide patients and their families regarding referrals and help them understand the next steps in the treatment process. It was satisfying to see the system working collaboratively to support children who need specialized care.

One of the highlights of the day was meeting and working alongside so many dedicated health professionals — doctors, CHOs, MPWs, GNMs, ANMs, and ASHA workers. Their teamwork and commitment made the camp successful.

Overall, the Susrusha Setu Health Camp was a productive and fulfilling experience. It reinforced the importance of community-based health initiatives and reminded me how collective effort can bring meaningful change to children’s lives.
